Wow I’m honestly surprised at this take!! Didn’t know there was so much controversy, I’m a big tom fan. I think he hides his insecurity in the jokes but when push comes to shove he is there for his friends!
Okay at first I was like damn this is a bit harsh on Tom, he must have some good things going. But then honestly I watched 20 min of Tom clips on YouTube and I think I agree w you! Don’t think he’s that funny!
right!!! it’s almost like Tom was inserted for potential kids watching in case they couldn’t follow the quick dialogue. maybe he’s the family friendly part of the show lol
Definitely part of the show that didn't age as well as the rest! Some of the stuff he says in the first season or two in particular, oy. I do feel like he's a caricature of a very specific 2000s/early '10s type, the kind of guy who might read pick-up artist books and try to become an influencer, and I think that's actually funny. But he does *not* really grow and change, I agree with that. His happy ending feels more unearned than others'.
Ohh the thought of him being almost entirely a caricature is super interesting. I definitely feel like his entire style of humor is very early 2010s-cringe in a way that's just kinda hard to watch today based on how various viral trends/styles of humor changes, regardless of what it actually is he says. I was trying to remember what else was big in 2010 specifically to anchor Tom, and the biggest hit songs from this time are like Club Can't Handle Me, Airplanes, Dynamite, etc. Those are 1000% the types of music Tom would unironically play on repeat and I feel like they also 1000% sum up his overall vibe

maybe we need to circle back when I get to the points he’s actually there for his friends - rn I’m just not buying it

Exactly! Of course all of this is to say nothing of his personal downfall, which was also a very Tom/2010s phenomenon, alas.
